HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Bridgewater-Raynham hoping to be Dragon slayers

The Duxbury High School football team has won a state-best 26 straight games, including the last two Div. 2 Super Bowl crowns.

When the Bridgewater-Raynham football team plays host to the Dragons on Saturday at 4, they won?t be worrying about their foes? lengthy winning streak.

?We really haven?t talked about it,? said Trojans coach Dan Buron. ?I?m sure our guys are aware they?ve got that streak, but we?re more concerned with ending our own two-game losing streak against them.?

Both are among the strongest programs either team will face this year, and have made a combined five playoff appearances (and four Super Bowl appearances) in the last three years.

?I?m pretty sure that?s why we play each other week one,? said Dragons coach Dave Maimaron. ?You?ll know what you have right away.?

Added Buron: ?We like to open with them because they?re a great team and it?s a great barometer of where you are as a team. The last few years we haven?t looked good at all against them, but our guys bounced back nicely afterward.?

Both teams graduated some talented personnel last year ? Duxbury graduated nine athletes playing at the Div. 1 level in college now while B-R saw their entire linebacking corps, and most of their offensive backfield, graduate last spring.

?Their backs last year were excellent, but their line should be even better this year,? said Maimaron. ?Their offensive line is always well coached, but returning all those guys is going to make them real tough up front.?

Said Buron: ?Our second layer on both offense and defense from last year are gone. They were real good, but so are the kids we have now. We just need to get them some experience.?

FRIDAY

Hanover at Abington, 7: Abington lost this game after muffing a punt on their own goal line last year, but it returns plenty of experience. Led by running back Babila Fonkem, the Green Wave should be an offensive powerhouse this year.

Abington 27, Hanover 6

Plymouth South at East Bridgewater, 7: Casey DeAndrade and Tim O?Brien are gone, but big things are expected from Andrew Benson.

E.B. 34, Plymouth South 15

Rockland at Scituate, 7: The Bulldogs will be much improved this season, but Scituate returns most of its starters from last year, including 6-5, 265-pound defensive lineman John Foster.

Scituate 27, Rockland 14

BC High at Brockton, 7: Two of the premier teams in the state, this is a potential Div. 1 Super Bowl matchup. BC High won?t have star linebacker Luke Catarius, and Brockton?s Micah Morel left a preseason game with an apparent injury.

BC High 16, Brockton 14

Second prediction: Boxers avenge this loss by beating Eagles in December for the Super Bowl title.

Coyle-Cassidy at Southeastern, 7: Dylan Greene will quarterback the Warriors, while also holding a secondary spot on defense.

Southeastern returns most of its offensive line and running back Demetrius Fontes-Semedo.

Coyle-Cassidy 28, Southeastern 16

Stoughton at Holliston, 7: The Black Knights are among the favorites to win the Hockomock League Davenport Division and they?ll get to prove that?s the case when they take on a team that won a Super Bowl in 2010.

Stoughton 23, Holliston 16

Whitman-Hanson at Plymouth North, 7: Both teams have tons of roster turnover from a season ago. W-H returns more skill players than P-N, though.

Whitman-Hanson 22, Plymouth North 13

Cardinal Spellman at Seekonk, 7: The Cardinals graduated nearly every starter from last year, and with only two players returning who started at Gillette last season, they?ll have a lot to prove in this one.

Seekonk 16, Spellman 10

SATURDAY

Apponequet at Middleboro, 1: The Sachems finally have QB Troy Rossi healthy, and the big-armed slinger should flash a new high-flying offense for Middleboro from the get-go.

Middleboro 28, Apponequet 18

Medfield at Oliver Ames, 4: Fresh off their first-ever Super Bowl appearance, the Tigers will need to replace some key cogs from last year?s success, but still have the weapons to be competitive.
