A millimeter-scale, wirelessly powered cardiac device

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? A team of engineers at Stanford has demonstrated the feasibility of a super-small, implantable cardiac device that gets its power not from batteries, but from radio waves transmitted from outside the body. The implanted device is contained in a cube just eight-tenths of a millimeter in radius. It could fit on the head of pin.

The findings were published in the journal Applied Physics Letters. In their paper, the researchers demonstrated wireless power transfer to a millimeter-sized device implanted five centimeters inside the chest on the surface of the heart -- a depth once thought out of reach for wireless power transmission.

The paper's senior author was Ada Poon, a professor of electrical engineering at Stanford. Sanghoek Kim and John Ho, both doctoral candidates in Poon's lab, were first authors.

The engineers say the research is a major step toward a day when all implants are driven wirelessly. Beyond the heart, they believe such devices might include swallowable endoscopes -- so-called "pillcams" that travel the digestive tract -- permanent pacemakers and precision brain stimulators; virtually any medical applications where device size and power matter.

A revolution in the body

Implantable medical devices in the human body have revolutionized medicine. Hundreds of thousands if not millions of pacemakers, cochlear implants and drug pumps are today helping people live relatively normal lives, but these devices are not without engineering challenges.

First off, they require power, which means batteries, and batteries are bulky. In a device like a pacemaker, the battery alone accounts for as much as half the volume of the device it drives. Second, batteries have finite lives. New surgery is needed when they wane.

"Wireless power solves both challenges," said Poon.

Last year, Poon made headlines when she demonstrated a wirelessly powered, self-propelled device capable of swimming through the bloodstream. To get there she needed to overturn some long-held assumptions about delivery of wireless power through the human body.

Her device works by a combination inductive and radiative transmission of power. Both are types of electromagnetic transfer in which a transmitter sends radio waves to a coil of wire inside the body. The radio waves produce an electrical current in the coil sufficient to operate a small device.

There is an indirect relationship between the frequency of the transmitted radio waves and the size of the receive antenna. That is, to deliver a desired level of power, lower frequency waves require bigger coils. Higher frequency waves can work with smaller coils.

"For implantable medical devices, therefore, the goal is a high-frequency transmitter and a small receiver, but there is one big hurdle," explained Kim.

Ignoring consensus

Existing mathematical models have held that high frequency radio waves do not penetrate far enough into human tissue, necessitating the use of low-frequency transmitters and large antennas -- too large to be practical for implantable devices.

Ignoring the consensus, Poon proved the models wrong. Human tissue dissipates electric fields quickly, it is true, but radio waves can travel in a different way -- as alternating waves of electric and magnetic fields. With the correct equations in hand, she discovered that high-frequency signals travel much deeper than anyone suspected.

"In fact, to achieve greater power efficiency, it is actually advantageous that human tissue is a very poor electrical conductor," said Kim. "If it were a good conductor, it would absorb energy, create heating and prevent sufficient power from reaching the implant."

According to their revised models, the researchers found that the maximum power transfer through human tissue occurs at about 1.7 billion cycles per second.

"In this high-frequency range, we can increase power transfer by about ten times over earlier devices," said Ho, who honed the mathematical models.

The discovery meant that the team could shrink the receive antenna by a factor of ten as well, to a scale that makes wireless implantable devices feasible. At that the optimal frequency, a millimeter-radius coil is capable of harvesting more than 50 microwatts of power, well in excess of the needs of a recently demonstrated eight-microwatt pacemaker.

Additional challenges

With the dimensional challenges solved, the team found themselves bound in by other engineering constraints. First, electronic medical devices must meet stringent health standards established by the IEEE, particularly with regard to tissue heating. Second, the team found that receive and transmit antennas had to be optimally oriented to achieve maximum efficiency. Differences in alignment of just a few degrees could produce troubling drops in power.

"This can't happen medical devices," said Poon. "As the human heart and body are in constant motion, solving this issue was critical to the success of our research."

The team responded by designing an innovative slotted transmit antenna structure. It resembles a swastika, but delivers consistent power efficiency regardless of orientation of the two antennas.

The new design serves additionally to focus the radio waves precisely at the point inside the body where the implanted device rests on the surface of the heart, increasing the electric field where it is needed most, but canceling it elsewhere. This helps reduce overall tissue heating to levels well within the IEEE standards. Poon has applied for a patent for the antenna structure.

This research was made possible by funding from the C2S2 Focus Center, one of six research centers funded under the Focus Center Research Program (FCRP), a Semiconductor Research Corporation entity. Lisa Chen also contributed to this study.

Sources claim Sharp's production of iPhone screen delayed

Not even a full moon cycle has passed since Sharp's president, Takashi Okuda, trumpeted the fact that his firm was one of the chosen few selected to provide screens for the new iPhone. Now, according to Reuters the troubled company has slipped behind on production, with The Wall Street Journal going as far to say mass production hasn't started at all. The nearest thing to a reason given for the situation is "manufacturing difficulties." If you were worried this might delay the reveal of Apple's next flagship, the WSJ also reminds us that Sharp is still one of three suppliers, though it's unclear just how big a slice of the production-pie Okuda's brigade has been given. At the very least, those on the production line can likely enjoy some much appreciated overtime.

How to Get Back Your Ex Long Distance Lover - How To Get Ex Back

Q:? I had an amazing relationship with someone who actually lived far away. It was a long distance relationship but it really seemed to work. We would hook up at least once every month or two and everytime was amazing. Other than that we would communicate constantly through the week.

But then as life has it, he got busy, I got busy and before long we just weren?t even communicating.

Is there a way for how to get back your ex long distance lover that can really work and overcome that weird non-communication that seemed to form out of nowhere?

???

A: Most people are negative towards long distance relationships, saying they never can really work. But when they do work, as you?ve found out, they can be fantastic. All the little things that seem to clog up relationships unnecessarily are eliminated, and instead focus is placed on one another. The time spent becomes special and unique, since the time is usually limited and not an everyday/every week affair.

But of course there comes that point. How long can it go on before the distance creates a real distance in the relationship?

If you had something special that you want to rekindle from afar there are ways to get things going again.

Always remember, we live in a time now where communication is easier than ever. And very cheap. We can actually video chat with one another no matter where we live (practically).

The first thing I would do when trying to figure how to get back your ex long distance lover is to implement texts. There are entire get back with your ex texting programs you can use for resurrecting long distance relationships. The key with texting is that you are starting slow and building up.? In order to get your long distance guy back, you don?t want to immediately get on video chat. You want to send some simple texts and build up some STEAM. By the time you get to video chat, he will be very anxious to see you and hear your actual voice. That is, if you do the texting right (that?s why texting ex routines can be so important as they outline how to properly build up desire).

Once you get that desire going, you can either move on to video chat, or you can go straight for setting up your next actual physical contact trip. They key is getting that desire rolling again, and then, you can literally jump right back into where you were before in the relationship.

Remember, losing contact with long distance lovers is very common, and is often not the fault of the usual relationship problems. It?s more just a natural getting carried away with life thing, and once you get back in touch, things could once again pick up right where the excitement left off.

(AP) ? The maker of Fat Tire beer says it will be monitoring the water it gets from the city of Fort Collins to check for residue from a deadly wildfire that put ash in northern Colorado's Poudre (POO'-dur) River.

The Fort Collins Coloradoan reports (http://tinyurl.com/9dygwqo ) that New Belgium Brewery's chemists have identified six compounds in the river water that could affect the flavor of its beer.

The Poudre runs through the High Park Fire burn area. The blaze destroyed more than 250 homes, killed one person and scorched 136 square miles in June.

Runoff from the burned-out slopes has turned the river black.

The city utility says it hasn't drawn any water from the river since runoff began, but it hopes to begin again next month.

Smallest antenna can increase Wi-Fi speed 200 times

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? Researchers from A*STAR's Institute of Microelectronics (IME) have developed the first compact high performance silicon-based cavity-backed slot (CBS) antenna that operates at 135 GHz. The antenna demonstrated 30 times stronger signal transmission over on-chip antennas at 135 GHz. At just 1.6mm x 1.2mm, approximately the size of a sesame seed, it is the smallest silicon-based CBS antenna reported to date for ready integration with active circuits.

IME's innovation will help realise a wireless communication system with very small form factor and almost two-thirds cheaper than a conventional CBS antenna. The antenna, in combination with other millimetre-wave building blocks, can support wireless speed of 20 Gbps -- more than 200 times faster than present day Wi-Fi , to allow ultra fast point-to-point access to rich media content, relevant to online learning and entertainment.

On the research breakthrough, Dr Hu Sanming, a key researcher from IME leading the antenna project, said, "The novel use of polymer filling enables >70% antenna size shrinkage and a record high gain of 5.68 dBi at 135 GHz. By filling the antenna cavity with polymer instead of air, we can achieve a flat surface for subsequent processing by standard technology that is amenable to mass production."

"The team has also designed a three-dimensional (3D) architecture to integrate the antenna with active circuits to form a fully integrated wireless millimetre-wave system-in-package solution with high performance, reduced footprint and low electromagnetic interference," commented Dr Je Minkyu, Principal Investigator of the Integrated Circuits and Systems Laboratory at IME.

Professor Dim-Lee Kwong, Executive Director of IME, said, "IME's silicon-based 135 GHz integrative antenna technology and the proposed 3D architecture have immense commercial potential as it combines form with function that can be realised with standard mass production infrastructure. These salient features make our technology extremely attractive to product developers who are looking to capture emerging markets in millimetre-wave applications."

The Institute of Microelectronics (IME) is a research institute of the Science and Engineering Research Council of the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR). Positioned to bridge the R&D between academia and industry, IME's mission is to add value to Singapore's semiconductor industry by developing strategic competencies, innovative technologies and intellectual property; enabling enterprises to be technologically competitive; and cultivating a technology talent pool to inject new knowledge to the industry. Its key research areas are in integrated circuits design, advanced packaging, bioelectronics and medical devices, MEMS, nanoelectronics, and photonics.

Unique Methods to Use on Free Weight Machines - My Health and ...

Machines that use free weights are the ones that you see with little to no pulley equipment, but instead only have bars that you place weight plates onto. They are much like using dumbbells but also can be used in for your own unique exercises as well. Dumbbells are a great type of workout equipment to use however; with a free weight machine you can have more control of your movements.

You are going to first want to set the equipment to fit your body type by adjusting the seat. Usually all you have to do on most universal machines is pull up on the seat and when at the point you want pull down to set. Give it a quick couple of pushes to make sure it is properly in place, and if there is a safety pin then insert it. For example, if you are on a chest press machine set it to where the handles are at chest level, just like where the bar would be on the flat bench. This is where the benefit of full control comes in, because with the equipment set properly you only can press the machine in a straight line like a proper bench press!

Exercise MachinesChest Isolation

For single arms presses you can choose any of the machines that you want i.e. regular, incline, or decline bench press. Remember each one works out different muscle areas! After choosing your exercise place a weight amount you have some difficulty with when using one hand. Set up your bench form properly just like you would on a normal bench, and then press both arms up at the same time. Keeping your left arm up and flexing the left pectoral, use your right arm to do perfect single arm presses. After completing your right arm set keep it up just like the left and continue the other arms single press. Do each arm for x4 sets of x10 repetitions.

Another unique chest isolation exercise for you to try would be side single arm presses. This is where instead of sitting on the machine to the front, you are now sitting to your left or right, depending on which arm you are working out. Assume you start with the right arm so sit facing the right. Push the arm out just like any other press, and place your left hand on your right chest if you want to see how great the muscle is being isolated. Switch arms and repeat. Perform x3 sets of x10 repetitions. Make sure your shoulder is not hanging off because that will cause an injury.

Back Isolation

The other area you can isolate easily is your back. Go to the pull down machine and set it up properly to your body. Remember to only place a moderate weight amount that is not too easy. Using one arm grab the handle for the exercise, and with the other hold onto the seat or handle if available. Perfectly pull down the weight making sure you are flexing those back muscles of yours that are being put into motion. Do x5 sets of x8 repetitions for each arm.

Next on the same machine sit to the side as well. These are going to be side lateral pull downs, and they put a great emphasis on your latissimus dorsi. Pull the weight down as far as you can go to where your triceps almost touch your sides. Remember to come up slowly when placing the weight back to switch arms. Doing it to fast may pull your muscles to injury, or force you to release the handle causing equipment damage. Perform x3 sets of x10 repetitions for each arm.

The great isolation exercises are sure to hit those target areas that you have been wanting to. Make sure to mix and match all of your exercises as well to ensure the best of exercise routines. Never let your body get into a routine because then your gains will plateau, and that you will make you have to work harder to get out of it and back on track!

Commercial Real Estate Recovering at a Slower Pace | RISMedia

Positive underlying fundamentals continue to support all of the major commercial real estate sectors, but a slowdown in job creation and ongoing tight loan availability has tempered growth in some areas, according to the National Association of REALTORS? quarterly commercial real estate forecast.

Lawrence Yun, NAR chief economist, notes there are mixed results among the commercial sectors. ?Job creation in the second quarter was about half of what we saw in the first quarter, which is moderating demand in the office sector,? he says. ?Industrial and warehouse space is holding on better because imports and exports have advanced. While exports to Europe generally are down, trade has been robust with India, China and other Asian nations, along with Brazil, Mexico and our strongest trading partner ? Canada.?

Although still positive, dampened demand is slightly moderating rent growth with the exception of the multifamily market. ?Sharply higher demand for apartments is causing rents to rise at faster rates,? Yun says. ?A return to normal household formation will mean even lower vacancy rates and higher rents in the future.?

The current commercial real estate cycle has been driven by shifts in demand without an oversupply of new construction. ?The difficulty small businesses have in getting commercial real estate loans for leasing or purchase is keeping a lid on demand,? Yun explains. ?Multifamily is the only commercial sector with a notable growth in new space, with some lending provided through government loans.?

With the exception of multifamily, vacancy rates remain above historic averages seen since 1999. Over that timeframe the typical vacancy rate has been 14.4 percent for the office market, 10.1 percent in industrial, 8.1 percent for retail and 5.8 percent in multifamily.

Vacancy rates are marginally declining and rents are modestly rising in all of the sectors, but significant changes in the outlook are unlikely before the end of the year. Many corporate decisions on spending and job hiring are on hold given uncertainty over the upcoming elections, whether Congress will effectively avoid a ?fiscal cliff,? and unsettled issues such as health care and banking/financial regulations.

?Overall companies hold plentiful cash reserves, but they are hesitant to hire without clarity over how these outstanding issues will impact the bottom line,? Yun says.

?Commercial real estate gains could be thwarted if lending from small and community banks dry up from excessive regulatory compliance costs, and if international big-bank capital rules are applied to smaller lending institutions,? Yun adds.

NAR?s latest Commercial Real Estate Outlook offers projections for four major commercial sectors and analyzes quarterly data in the office, industrial, retail and multifamily markets. Historic data for metro areas were provided by REIS, Inc., a source of commercial real estate performance information.

Office Markets

Vacancy rates in the office sector are expected to fall from an estimated 16.1 percent in the third quarter to 15.6 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

The markets with the lowest office vacancy rates presently are Washington, D.C., with a vacancy rate of 9.4 percent; New York City, at 10.0 percent; and New Orleans, 12.8 percent.

Office rent is projected to increase 2.0 percent this year and 2.6 percent in 2013. Net absorption of office space in the U.S., which includes the leasing of new space coming on the market as well as space in existing properties, should be 24.1 million square feet in 2012 and 47.8 million next year.

Industrial Markets

Industrial vacancy rates are forecast to decline from 10.7 percent in the third quarter of this year to 10.5 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

The areas with the lowest industrial vacancy rates currently are Orange County, Calif., with a vacancy rate of 4.6 percent; Los Angeles, 4.8 percent; and Miami at 6.8 percent.

Annual industrial rent is likely to rise 1.7 percent in 2012 and 2.4 percent next year. Net absorption of industrial space nationally is seen at 59.8 million square feet this year and 67.2 million in 2013.

Retail Markets

Retail vacancy rates are projected to decline from 10.9 percent in the third quarter to 10.7 percent in the third quarter of 2013.

Presently, markets with the lowest retail vacancy rates include San Francisco, 3.8 percent; Fairfield County, Conn., 3.9 percent; and Long Island, N.Y., and Orange County, Calif., both at 5.3 percent.

Average retail rent is forecast to rise 0.8 percent this year and 1.3 percent in 2013. Net absorption of retail space should be 10.3 million square feet this year and 20.1 million in 2013.

Multifamily Markets

The apartment rental market ? multifamily housing ? is expected to see vacancy rates drop from 4.3 percent in the third quarter to 4.2 percent in the third quarter of 2013; vacancy rates below 5 percent generally are considered a landlord?s market with demand justifying higher rents.

Areas with the lowest multifamily vacancy rates currently are Portland, Ore., at 2.0 percent; New York City and Minneapolis, both at 2.2 percent; and New Haven, Conn., and San Jose, Calif., both at 2.4 percent.

Average apartment rent is likely to increase 4.1 percent in 2012 and another 4.4 percent next year. Multifamily net absorption should be 219,300 units this year and 236,600 in 2013.

The Commercial Real Estate Outlook is published by the NAR Research Division for the commercial community. NAR?s Commercial Division, formed in 1990, provides targeted products and services to meet the needs of the commercial market and constituency within NAR.

The NAR commercial components include commercial members; commercial committees, subcommittees and forums; commercial real estate boards and structures; and the NAR commercial affiliate organizations ? CCIM Institute, Institute of Real Estate Management, Realtors? Land Institute, Society of Industrial and Office Realtors?, and Counselors of Real Estate.

Approximately 78,000 NAR and institute affiliate members specialize in commercial brokerage and related services, and an additional 232,000 members offer commercial real estate services as a secondary business.

Syria sectarian divide turns to fear and flight

BEIRUT (AP) ? Abu Qais, a Sunni Muslim in Syria's capital Damascus, says six members of his extended family have been killed by gunmen who belong to the minority Alawite sect of President Bashar Assad.

The gunmen who grabbed one of his distant cousins called up his family while they were torturing him "so they could hear his screams," said Abu Qais, an anti-Assad activist who spoke on condition his full name not be used for fear of reprisals.

Sectarian slayings between Syria's Sunni majority and the Alawite minority have been a brutal reality of Syria's 17-month-old conflict, and they have only accelerated as the country falls into outright civil war. Sunnis have largely backed the uprising against Assad's rule, while the Alawites ? members of an offshoot of Shiism ? have firmly stood behind the regime, where they fill the leadership ranks.

And as tit-for-tat killings have swelled, so has the segregation of the two communities as they flee each other. In Damascus and other cities, Sunnis and Alawites avoid venturing into each other's neighborhoods for fear of being snatched. Some Alawite districts in the capital are now ringed with checkpoints manned not only by security forces but also residents who have taken up arms to protect their homes.

Those in mixed neighborhoods flee their homes to move into safer enclaves dominated by their community ? whether in the same city or in another part of the country.

"Mutual threats in Damascus have succeeded in triggering migration," said Fateh Jamous, an Alawite activist from Latakia, the Mediterranean coastal city where many Alawites have fled. Latakia itself has so far represented a sort of tense neutral ground ? its population is about half Sunni, half Alawite. "That created a sort of balance of terror. So far, it has been generally peaceful," he said by telephone from Latakia.

The flight raises the grim possibility that Syria could go down the path of neighboring Iraq. There, violence in 2006 and 2007 effectively turned into a sort of sectarian cleansing, as Shiite and Sunni militias and insurgents targeted members of the rival community, killing thousands and sending hundreds of thousands fleeing their homes. To this day, Baghdad remains largely divided between wholly Shiite and wholly Sunni districts with few mixed areas remaining.

Syria has not yet reached that scale. But the prospect of it breaking up along religious or ethnic lines is no longer a remote possibility in a conflict that activists estimate has killed 20,000 people as Assad's regime tries to crush rebels determined to topple him. Kurds in the northeast have begun rumbling with talk of self-rule. Alawites have been pulling back into their ancestral heartland, along the Mediterranean coast and in the nearby mountains.

Some anti-regime activists believe that two reported massacres of Sunnis earlier this year, in the towns of Houla in May and Qubeir in June, aimed to drive Sunnis out of areas near main routes to the coast to ensure control of the Alawite enclave.

But the tearing apart of the two communities has been taking place on a smaller but increasing scale, neighborhood by neighborhood and city by city.

Their coexistence has always been uneasy. Sunnis make up the vast majority of Syria's 23 million people, and Alawites about 15 percent of the population. For the past 40 years, the Assad family's regime has enforced a secular ideology that zealously marketed the notion of equality among the nation's many religious and ethnic groups.

But at the same time, it was promoting the Alawite community to which the Assad family belongs.

Alawites, who had traditionally been among the poorest in Syria, were brought in by the Assads to fill the regime's leadership, elevating them into an elite class that had historically been Sunni. Top positions in the army, police and security agencies were given to Alawite men, while their women typically worked in the government. Significantly, inter-marriages between Sunnis and Alawites have been rare, though Assad himself is married to a British-raised Sunni who hails from the central city of Homs.

In Damascus' mostly Sunni neighborhood of Mazzeh, a resident named Moaz nostalgically remembers the woods that once stood on a hill close to his home. Then, years ago, the trees were cut down, and apartment blocs went up to house Alawites taking positions in the military and government. Their area, built within the Mazzeh area to promote an image of integration, became known as Mazzeh-86.

"Our relation with them was like a cold peace, 'We mind our own business and you mind yours'," recalled Moaz, a 28-year-old anti-Assad activist. He spoke on condition his full name not be used to protect himself and his family from reprisals.

Now the two areas are virtually at war. Alawites from Mazzeh-86 frequently help put down protests by Sunnis in the larger district, beating up protesters outside mosques alongside security forces. Checkpoints divide the two areas. In Sunni Mazzeh, there have been numerous slayings of those believed to be informers for the government, both Alawites and Sunnis, said Moaz.

"People with coastal accents (Alawites) are instantly recognized. They are arrogant and sure of themselves," he said.

Damascus had been largely unaffected by the fighting raging elsewhere in the country, until last month when rebels staged a major offensive in the city of 1.7 million people, sparking a heavy regime counter-attack. As the fighting raged, sectarian violence increased. So far, it has been concentrated in poor or lower middle-class neighborhoods of the capital, while most upscale districts remain peaceful, residents and activists say.

Alawites, who by some estimates make up 30 percent of Damascus' residents, have fled neighborhoods where they make up a small minority, finding relative security elsewhere where Alawite numbers are higher, residents and activists say. Many Alawite men send their families to their home villages near the coast.

"Most Alawites are in this with the view that it is a life or death war for them," said another Damascus resident by Skype. Identifying himself only as a "native Syrian" ? refusing to give his sectarian allegiance ? he said checkpoints outside Alawite neighborhoods have been beefed up in recent weeks, with up to 15 or 20 heavily armed security men and residents staffing them.

"The Alawites think that they would be subjected to genocide if Assad goes," he said.

Sectarian violence has been rampant in Homs, a major center of the revolt that was subjected to a devastating government siege earlier this year. Residents and activists say its population has been effectively divided into two sections, with Sunnis in one side and Alawites and Christians in the other.

Mohammed Saleh, a Homs resident and a rare Alawite who actively works with the opposition, says several months ago two Sunni men showed up at his apartment and ordered him to pack up and leave in 10 days.

"I made calls. I spoke to many of my friends and contacts in Homs and elsewhere. I was able to stay," Saleh, reached by telephone in Homs, said. But Saleh's son, who had been living with him, left with his wife and kids to an Alawite part of the city.

"I am never leaving," said Saleh, a trained chemist now making a living selling solar energy systems for household use, in huge demand because of lengthy power cuts. His work takes him across the entire city, but he never travels alone. "I make a point of taking with me someone from the neighborhood I am going to. Even if it is an Alawite district, I still go with a resident from there."

Some of Saleh's closest friends and neighbors have not been so lucky.

"In December and January alone, I lost a friend who was a Sunni doctor, another who was a Shiite engineer and a third one who was an Alawite army officer," said Saleh.

Clooney aids Obama campaign with Geneva fundraiser

(AP) ? George Clooney raised almost $15 million for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign at the actor's Los Angeles home in May. For his second act, Clooney is set to arrive Monday in Geneva, a center for international organizations, governance and business.

Organizers expect to pull in a more modest amount of about $500,000 from U.S. donors for Obama's campaign, with many flying in to Geneva from around the world.

Americans Abroad for Obama, the event's sponsor, says on its Web site that guests are paying $15,000 per person to dine with Clooney, $5,000 for a photo with him and $1,000 to attend a reception before the dinner. About 30 people are attending the dinner, with at least 100 at the reception.

The event is co-hosted by Geneva-based American lawyer Charles C. Adams Jr. and Matthew Barzun, Obama's campaign finance chairman. The dinner is being held at Adams' home in an historic part of the city overlooking Lake Geneva, where Adams held a previous fundraiser for Obama in 2008.

Clooney was due to arrive in Geneva from the villa where he typically spends time during the summer on northern Italy's Lake Como. Obama campaign officials in Washington have declined to comment on the fundraiser.

The president has called the actor and director a good friend who tries to keep his distance so Obama won't be criticized for hanging out with Hollywood celebrities. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight earlier this month, Obama said he got to know Clooney through his work on Sudan when Obama was in the U.S. Senate. Clooney has led campaigns to end the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, and for more humanitarian aid for millions of people caught up in the fighting.

The Democratic president and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have both been aggressively hunting for campaign money overseas, seeking any advantage in a tight race that's expected to stay that way into the fall. Each has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in this fashion, not including the sums raised overseas by both party committees, though it is just a fraction of the more than $300 million Obama has raised overall and the $155 million raised by Romney.

American citizens and green-card holders can legally donate regardless of where they live, subject to the $2,500-per-person contribution limit that applies to those living stateside. U.S. law bans foreigners from contributing to political campaigns. Campaigns, the parties and political committees are expected to review donors and reject any ineligible contributions.

Swiss lab to analyse Arafat remains for poisoning: hospital

A Swiss radiology lab said on Friday it has received the go-ahead from the widow of Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat to test his remains for poisoning by polonium, a highly radioactive element.

"We are waiting for a formal, written letter from the lawyer before travelling to Ramallah" to carry out the probe, a spokesman for the lab at the Lausanne University Hospital Centre, Darcy Christen, told AFP.

"Time is of the essence, you could say it's a question of weeks, not months, because the traceability of polonium diminishes by half every 138 days," Christen said, noting that this has occurred 20 times since Arafat died aged 75 on November 11, 2004.

The Palestinian Authority also approved the probe, which was requested by Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas after a media investigation found elevated levels of polonium on some of Arafat's belongings, including clothing he wore before he died at a military hospital outside Paris.

A statement from French lawyers acting for Arafat's widow Suha Arafat and their daughter Zawra welcomed the authority's comments.

"We are glad that the position of the Palestinian Authority is to accept the exhumation of the body of Yasser Arafat," Pierre-Olivier Sur and Jessica Finelle wrote.

"However, we consider that this act of enquiry should be in coordination with the French investigating system... which should appoint an investigating judge to conduct the necessary enquiries," the statement said, adding that such an appointment must be made "very quickly."

In the West Bank city of Ramallah, where Arafat is buried, Tawfiq Tirawi, head of the Palestinian committee probing his death, told AFP on Friday that he had "not so far been officially informed" of a decision by the Swiss lab.

French doctors had offered no explanation for Arafat's death, and many Palestinians believe he was poisoned by Israel, which denies the allegations.

Suha and Zawra Arafat lodged a complaint for murder against persons unknown in France on July 31 over the radioactive poisoning claims.

Their lawyer in Geneva, Marc Bonnant, told Swiss television on Thursday that she "wanted this investigation... she's the one pushing for it, and as a result we will go to Ramallah," the de facto capital of the occupied West Bank.

Polonium is a highly toxic radioactive substance that is rarely found outside military and scientific circles. It was used to kill Russian former spy turned Kremlin critic Alexander Litvinenko, who died in 2006 after drinking tea laced with the substance in London.

The Swiss team will first carry out a fact-finding mission during which they will meet representatives of the Palestinian Authority, inspect Arafat's mausoleum and assess technological and scientific capabilities on the ground, Christen said.

If they deem the testing to be viable, they will carry out a second mission to take samples from the body.

The Swiss experts were among several specialists consulted by the Al-Jazeera news channel, which commissioned the analysis of Arafat's personal effects.

Armstrong's fall from grace may help cycling

(AP) ? Cycling supporters say that Lance Armstrong's fall from grace may actually benefit the sport by demonstrating to potential cheaters what can happen to them if they dope.

Former Tour de France champion Bernard Thevenet told French newspaper Le Monde that Armstrong's lifetime ban and the expected loss of his seven Tour de France titles "is really a very strong message to cycling and those around the sport who might be tempted to cheat."

Cycling's credibility has been repeatedly battered since the Festina scandal in 1998, when entire teams were ejected from the race after carloads of drugs were found by police. The punishments imposed Friday by U.S. anti-doping authorities on one of sport's most highly acclaimed figures follows on sanctions handed to Armstrong contemporaries Floyd Landis, Jan Ullrich and Alberto Contador.

That four of the sport's top figures of the last 20 years have been sanctioned is seen by many as a sign that cycling is gradually cleaning up its act.

Tour de France organizers declined to make any detailed comment on Armstrong's case, saying they would wait for a detailed explanation of the official decision from USADA and the UCI, cycling's governing body.

Five-time Tour winner Bernard Hinault was dismissive of how Armstrong's case had been handled.

"Frankly, I don't give a damn," Hinault told Ouest France newspaper. "It's his problem, not mine. This problem should have been settled 10 or 15 years ago."

Two-time Tour winner Thevenet said that Armstrong's downfall "is very bad news for cycling" though balanced by the potential deterrent effect for the future.

At the grassroots level, little change is expected to come from cycling's latest scandal.

The cycling boom that Armstrong is credited with sparking in the U.S. continued both during his 2006-08 absence from the sport and since his retirement, according to figures from USA Cycling. Numbers show an uninterrupted increase in USA Cycling's membership, to 70,829 last year from 69,771 a year earlier.

The former deputy head of the Tour de France said the latest twist in Armstrong's case "isn't a surprise, we've been expecting this for a while." Daniel Baal, the Tour deputy director from 2001 to 2004, the pinnacle of Armstrong's reign, said cycling authorities must not stop pursuing others connected to any doping uncovered by the Armstrong investigation.

"My only wish is that USADA go all the way and lay out the whole dossier, because we have to know everything, especially all the accomplices who supported Lance Armstrong," Baal said on France Info radio.

Some doubt remains about the impact on Armstrong's vast and varied business interests. But the initial reaction from his biggest sponsor, Nike Inc., suggests that he retains their support. The sportswear giant issued a statement that said it "plans to continue to support Lance and the Lance Armstrong Foundation "because of Lance's "unwavering" protestations of innocence.

Armstrong's other endorsements include or have included deals with RadioShack Corp., Oakley sunglasses, 24-hour Fitness, Nissan, Anheuser-Busch InBev's Michelob Ultra, FRS energy drinks and Trek bikes. Several of them also support Armstrong's foundation, which he started after he beat cancer.

Former rival Ullrich played down the significance that USADA's decision will have on the sport. Ullrich, who served a two-year doping ban, said, "I'm no longer bothered" about the Armstrong saga.

The retired German racer, constantly second to Armstrong, expressed no desire to rewrite the record book of cycling's greatest event, even though he would be the biggest beneficiary.

"I know how the order was on the finishing line at the time," Ullrich said. "I've finished with my professional career and have always said that I was proud of my second-place finishes."

Spaceship companies clear NASA milestones

Two commercial spaceflight companies have checked off vital milestones on the path toward flights to the International Space Station for NASA, the space agency announced Thursday.

The Hawthorne, Calif.-based SpaceX has completed its Space Act Agreement under NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services program, or COTS. The company is slated to launch the first of its 12 contracted robotic cargo flights to the space station from Florida's Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in October, officials said.

Meanwhile, the Dream Chaser space plane being developed by Sierra Nevada Space Systems in Colorado has reached its first milestone ? a program implementation plan review ? under NASA's recently announced Commercial Crew Integrated Capability initiative. CCiCap is part of the agency's effort to spur the development of private American crew-carrying spaceships, to fill the void left by the space shuttle's retirement.

"We're working to open a new frontier for commercial opportunities in space and create job opportunities right here in Florida and across the United States," Bolden said from NASA's Kennedy Space Center. "And we're working to in-source the work that is currently being done elsewhere and bring it right back here to the U.S. where it belongs." [Top 10 Private Spaceships]

SpaceX has already flown to the space station once as part of its COTS partnership. The company's unmanned Dragon capsule docked to the orbiting lab during a historic demonstration mission in May, becoming the first private vehicle ever to do so.

The flight was designed to test whether Dragon and SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket were ready to begin the 12 official resupply flights, for which SpaceX holds a NASA contract worth $1.6 billion.

NASA also signed a $1.9 billion deal with Virginia-based Orbital Sciences Corp. for eight robotic cargo flights with its Cygnus vessel. Orbital plans to launch its first test flight with Cygnus this winter, NASA officials said.

Earlier this month, NASA announced that Sierra Nevada will receive $212.5 million under CCiCap, the latest initiative of the agency's Commercial Crew Program. SpaceX will get $440 million to help upgrade Dragon to a crew-carrying craft, while Boeing was awarded $460 million for its CST-100 capsule.

The Commercial Crew Program also awarded funding to private spaceflight firms in each of the last two years, in rounds known as Commercial Crew Development 1 and 2. Sierra Nevada got funding during both CCDev-1 and CCDev-2 as well.

NASA has said it wants at least two private American spaceships to be flying astronauts to the space station by 2017. Until that happens, the agency will be dependent on Russian Soyuz spacecraft to provide this taxi service, at about $63 million per seat.
