Ria's Random Thoughts...: Mothers Who Know

We had some excellent talks on Mothers' Day in church. One that struck my heart in particular referred to this talk by Julie Beck. I remember hearing it a few years ago and then all the controversy surrounding it.

Some were offended.

Some felt guilty.

Of what?

For me, failing as a mother I think.

I reread it this week and realized I don't need to feel offended or guilty.

I just need to realize, maybe I don't know it all yet.

And that's okay. I'm learning. And I'm thankful for those inspired to help me learn what I need to do.

Here's my summary of the talk that shook things up for a few weeks. In light of things happening lately in the media concerning motherhood, I am glad I took the time to reread this message and think about what I know as a mother and what I'm still working on. This wasn't a criticism, it was a light in a very messed up world. Like Sister Beck said, we do need mothers who know. I'm grateful for those motherly influences in my life to teach me what I need to know.

Mothers Who Know Bear Children
Mothers who know desire to bear children. ?In the eternal perspective, children?not possessions, not prestige?are our greatest jewels.?
There is eternal influence and power in motherhood.
Mothers Who Know Honor Sacred Ordinances and Covenants
Dress in Sunday best: for boys (which I have) that means white shirts and ties and missionary haircuts. They know that if they are not pointing their children to the temple, they are not pointing them toward desired eternal goals.
Mothers Who Know Are Nurturers
To cultivate, care for, and make grow. Mothers who know create a climate for spiritual and temporal growth in their homes. Women should pattern their homes after the Lord?s house (D&C 109).
Mothers Who Know Are Leaders
They plan for missions, temple marriages, and education. They plan for prayer, scripture study, and family home evening. They do not abandon their plan by succumbing to social pressure and worldly models of parenting. These wise mothers who know are selective about their own activities and involvement to conserve their limited strength in order to maximize their influence where it matters most.
Mothers Who Know Are Teachers
A well taught friend told me that he did not learn anything at church that he had not already learned at home. His parents used family scripture study, prayer, family home evening, mealtimes, and other gatherings to teach. Doctrines of the gospel taught in the MTC would be a review and not a revelation.

They permit less of what will not bear good fruit eternally. They allow less media in their homes, less distractions, less activity that draws their children away from their home. Their goal is to prepare future fathers and mothers who will be builders of the Lord?s kingdom.
Mothers Who Know Stand Strong and Immovable
