MILWAUKEE- You might notice a couple of billboards around town "praising" Mayor Tom Barrett.? A group that opposes Barrett actually put them up.
The signs popped up across the metro Milwaukee area in the last day.
At first glance, you might think it's for Mayor Barrett's re-election campaign, but one political science professor says it's to prevent Barrett from running against Governor Walker.
Billboards with Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett's picture are sprouting up on the sides of interstates, boasting how he balanced the city's budget, with the governor's help.?
But these billboards aren't from Barrett's campaign, they are from the conservative group, Wisconsin Club for Growth.
Marquette Political Science Professor John McAdams says the ad is designed to do two things, "They (the conservative group) think Barrett is going to run and they are giving him the first blow in the campaign.? The second interpretation is that they think Barrett would be a better candidate than some other potential candidates and they are trying to deter him," said McAdams.? "The single strongest line of attack against Barrett would be that he criticized the Walker reforms, turned around and used them to balance the city's budget."
Even though Barrett has launched a re-election campaign for mayor, he is still considering a run in a possible recall election against Governor Walker.
Mayor Barrett would not go on camera, but his campaign sent this statement:
"The only thing accurate about that billboard is the picture of Tom Barrett.? Outside special interests, poised to spend millions of dollars, should get their facts straight."
McAdams says while these ads might get a lot of people talking, he says they are aimed directly at Mayor Barrett.
Governor Walker's campaign told TODAY'S?TMJ4 they have nothing to do with the ads and the Wisconsin Club for Growth acted on its own.
