Chevron reported a drop in quarterly profit on Friday as oil prices weakened from a year earlier, but fatter refining margins cushioned the blow. Chevron?s second-quarter net income slid 6.7% to $7.21 billion, or $3.66 per share. The company easily beat analysts? consensus forecast, which called for an EPS of $3.24, but had a harder time with revenues. Sales slid 9.2% to $62.6 billion, well below the $68.5 billion estimate.

Revenue weakness was more directly tied to Chevron?s upstream business this quarter. ?Our second-quarter earnings and cash flow were among our strongest ever, even with softer oil markets,? said Chairman and CEO John Watson. Net oil equivalent production fell 2.6% to 2.624 million barrels per day, the company noted, as production increases from project ramp-ups was more than offset by shut-in production, downtime for maintenance, and dispositions.

In the U.S., the company saw upstream earnings hit $1.32 billion, $632 million less than in the year-ago quarter. Chevron saw both lower production and lower price realizations in Q2, as oil prices took a big plunge after a solid start to the year. Average price for liquids fell to $97 per barrel, from $104 a year ago, while average price realizations for natural gas stood at $2.17 per thousand cubic feet, down from $4.35.

Internationally, earnings were a bit stronger, sliding $619 million to $4.3 billion. The company noted lower volume and higher exploration expense, and highlighted the shut-in in Brazil?s pre-salt Frade field. Chevron?s earnings came a day after Exxon Mobil (XOM), where profits fell short of expectations as oil and gas output sagged and its chemical unit faced weak margins.

Looking forward, analysts seem increasingly negative, as the average estimate for the third quarter has moved down from $3.34 a share to $2.95 over the last ninety days. Over the past sixty days, the average estimate for the fiscal year has reached $12.47 per share, a decline from $13.39.

Back in 2011, I wrote about the best personal finance software, and I crowned MoneyDance as the King of the software. ?Again, in that post I indicated that one of the primary attractions to MoneyDance was its foreign currency feature. ?It was also a fully financed package that allowed me to budget as well as track all my investments.

While I still think it?s the best piece of personal finance software, I?m no longer interested in tracking my investments with personal finance software. ?Instead, I?m interested in finding the best piece of budgeting software.

The Best Budgeting Software

The two options I seriously considered were: You Need A Budget and Mvelopes.

In the reviews I?ve read, (see Mvelopes Review by One Money Design and my own review of You Need A Budget?[version 3] or Bible Money Matters review of YNAB 4) these are the two most commonly used pieces of budgeting software.

Now, this is a good time for disclosure. ?I did not purchase a copy of You Need A Budget or Mvelopes. ?Both were promotion products given to me at no charge. ?The links to Mvelopes and YNAB are affiliate links.

You Need A Budget (YNAB) Vs. Mvelopes

The beauty of these two products is that they are different enough that I think you?ll clearly be able to tell which best fits your preferences and which is the best budgeting software for your needs.

On computer vs. online

YNAB is a program you download onto your computer. ?All information is stored on your hard drive.
Budgeting software is run from a password protected website. ?All information is stored online ?in the cloud?.

For those nervous about information being stored online, YNAB is clearly a better choice.

How information is accessed:

With YNAB, users go to their financial institution and download the transactions in a compatible format (OFX, QFX, QIF, or CSV). ?After opening YNAB, you import the saved transaction.
Mvelopes does all the importing automatically. ?When you sign in, your new transactions will automatically appear to be ready to drop into the correct category.

Mobile options:

Both programs have apps for both Android and Apple products. ?YNAB has a lite free version and a paid version. ?Mvelopes only has the full service free option.

Accounting methods:

Once you?ve imported your transactions with YNAB, you simply need to click on the category section and assign the expense to a category.
Mvelopes allows you to drag and drop the transaction into the appropriate envelop. ?Mvelopes is an online envelop budgeting software.

Both programs have simple ways to see an overview of your budget transactions and history. ?The features seem comparable.

Compatibility:

Both products can be used on either a Mac or PC. ?Interestingly, I have trouble using Mvelopes with Chrome, so when I get into Mvelopes I always do that with FireFox.

Cost:

YNAB costs $60. ?One of the nice things about YNAB is that you?re never forced to upgrade. ?As new features and new releases are added, you?re always given the option to buy the updated version or keep using what you have. ?I know that was my frustration with Quicken ? they forced you to upgrade every few years. ?The fully functional app is $4.99 through iTunes or Android.

Final Best Budgeting Software Verdict: Mvelopes

As I disclosed above, cost was not a consideration for me as both products were free because of promotional reason.

I can honestly say you won?t go wrong with either product. ?They are both amazingly helpful for keeping a budget. ?The best budgeting software depends on your needs and preferences.

Since I collect credit cards like most people collect business cards, the idea of downloading all my accounts to YNAB sounded like no fun. ?I love the fact that I can sign into Mvelopes and all my transactions are instantly waiting for me to drag and drop into the appropriate account. ?Also, I do 95% of my spending on credit cards, so Mvelopes makes that very easy. ?I?m also a fan of envelop budgeting.

The end result is that I?m using Mvelopes and would highly recommend it.

However, if I had to pay for one or the other, there is a good chance that I?d get YNAB because it is a one time cost of $60. ?I have a philosophy that I always try the cheaper product first, and if I don?t like it, then I try the more expensive product.

Remember, if you?re not currently keeping a budget or struggling to keep a budget, either of these programs could save you hundreds of dollars a year. ?Seriously, $60 or $95 per year is a small price to pay for saving your hard earned money.

NEW YORK (AP) ? U.S. stocks gave up early gains and were trading slightly lower on Wall Street early Monday, following big gains last week on hopes for more action by European leaders to address that region's debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down nine points at 13,065 at 11:30 a.m. The Dow had been up 53 points in mid-morning trading.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner meets separately with Germany's finance minister and the head of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, on Monday. Draghi's pledge to do whatever was needed to protect the euro set off a market rally last week. The Dow rose back above 13,000 for the first time since May and is now up 1.6 percent for the month.

Expectations are high that Draghi will back up his words with action when the central bank meets Thursday, said David Brown, the CEO and chief market strategist at the research firm Sabrient. "I think that's the big story this week," he said. "The market has really responded to his bold statement. I hope the ECB takes action. If they don't do anything, it's not going to be pretty."

Investors are also looking toward the Federal Reserve's meeting this week. Many in the financial markets believe the Fed will take new steps to stimulate the economy in coming months.

Two corporate deals announced early Monday pushed some stocks higher. Chicago Bridge & Iron Co. agreed to buy Shaw Group for $3 billion in cash and stock. Shaw jumped $15.16, or 57 percent, to $41.85.

Also, medical and industrial equipment maker Roper Industries plans to buy hospital software company Sunquest Information Systems for $1.42 billion. Roper also raised its earnings estimate for the year, a result of the pending merger and a stronger dollar. Roper gained 5 percent to $103.60. Sunquest is privately owned.

In other trading, the broader Standard & Poor's 500 index is down two points to 1,383, while the Nasdaq is down 12 points to 2,945.

Supermarket operator Supervalu rose 2 percent to $2.03 after the company announced that it would oust its CEO. Earlier this month the Minneapolis company reported weaker sales and profits and suspended its dividend. Supervalu also said it may put itself up for sale.

I feel so honored to be the first comment. All of my hard work and dedication has paid off. Brutal list. So sick of EA Sports and their online achievements. I have absolutely no desire to play online games. I have played maybe 10-15 ever, and that is not just with Madden, that is with every EA or 2K sports game combined. Frustrating.

I'll just take my HDD or download my profile onto a friend's Xbox, and use his Kinect to get the achievement.

@#1 - Congrats!

Everybody has been complaining for years that the Madden achievements are too simple with no thought to them. Then, when EA decides to change everything up and give us new achievements, everyone complains. Is there no pleasing you?

BTW, I hate MUT. I hate Kinect and online as well. But you can't fault the developer for actually giving us different achievements, can you? While this isn't Ninja Gaiden II or Dark Souls, I welcome something a little more challenging than "complete a 50 yard pass", "stay in the pocket for 10 seconds" or "kick a 60 yard field goal". You aren't achieving anything when you do those (especially when you can adjust sliders or play with two controllers to make easier). While I also hate luck-based achievements (those should be outlawed), ones that I actually have to work for I don't mind.

These achievements are not difficult by any means, just a little time consuming. You can boost the online ones with someone, so why complain there? Of course, you'll have to do them quickly if you've rented the game, and online can be spotty. For the Kinect one, it seems that most of us know someone with a Kinect, so while that achievement is a bit of an inconvenience, it?s certainly doable. If not, oh erll. Are you not going to get the game because of one 25 point achievement? The MUT ones... there's only four of them, and except for the 85 rated team, the other three are simple. The challenging ones will be the created player ones, but I?m sure someone will figure out a way to get those easily as well.

I?m all for the different achievements. Not since 2007 has there really been a drastic change in them. While I do enjoy an easy gamerscore, I don?t mind working for these. While I would love to get 100% in this (as I have with every other Madden and NCAA Football), I welcome any points I can get.

I'm not complaining about them, but the whole have to buy a $150 peripheral for one lousy achievement is just plain stupid... Pretty sure the score chievos are going to be frustrating but a boosting partner should help make it easier.

Also, I have always had real problems playing online in Madden, always seem to get D/c midway through a game - so gave up. Hope you don't loose point for getting beaten otherwise its going to be a real pain to get to 600 pts.

I thought achievement that required you to buy something that did not come with the game weren't allowed. Remember Fable 2 and the Fable XBLA game, they had to change it so that you can get it without both games.

I'm not here to complain about the achievements being hard...I'm here to say that they are just plain stupid. The majority of them are tied to modes I won't even touch, and there's no way I'm playing career mode in that many positions. If the game is good I'll get it since I don't play for achievements anymore, but for those who do this is the worst list of all time. It's basically farming quests in a football video game.

The defensive player ones should be easy. Just turn off offsides and get a crap ton of sacks. The TE and WR ones will be the toughest, IMO. What I don't like is that you have to use a created player. Why can't I use RG3 or Trent Richardson to get the achievements?! I get not wanting to give the player a leg up with someone's stats, but at least let me use a rookie.
